The backlash was the result of frequent backtracking of assurances on the part of NMC Administration in providing sheds for various small scale businesses to weeklong persons like the same provided to “Gathai Kamgar” (sort of semi-skilled labours) including cobblers and shoemakers, blacksmith, locksmith (repairing locks, keys), tailors and others.

It was no sight of a weeklong spirit. On the contrary, it was a sight of a spirited backlash by the weeklong brethren who stormed the old Headquarters of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and resorted to damaging property of a chamber previously occupied by an official but now shifted to new Headquarters.

Hundreds of weeklong persons marched to the NMC office in Civil Lines at about 5 pm on Tuesday (February 18). But found the office dead silent as they had reached to old Headquarters of the NMC. The total silence outraged the spirited physically challenged persons who broke the silence of over 9 months of fooling around by the NMC Administration and also broke many properties with great force in one of the silent chambers. “If the NMC has no guts to provide sheds to them then why the repeated assurances for the past nine months,” roared the physically weeklong with anguish writ large on their faces.

“The then Mayor Archana Dehankar had assured us of providing sheds for small scale businesses like given to “Gathai Kamgar.” However, the concerned officials have pushed the files under their weight and meting out injustice to us. The present Mayor Anil Sole had on August 3, 2013 also assured and even directed the officials to find suitable land and other places for the sheds. But the Zone-level officials have not moved an inch in this direction despite over six months of period. The Vidarbha Weeklong Sangharsh Samiti members in large numbers visit the NMC every month and return back fooled and empty handed. Just 15 days ago, the weeklong held demonstrations at entry gates of Headquarters. The officials again assured that in the coming 15 days a concrete decision would be taken in this regard. The Estate Officer D D Jambhulkar assured that he will get information from Zone-level and come up with final decision. However, on Monday (February 17), he came up with a letter stating that it is impossible to get land at any Zone-level. The rude words of Jambhulkar fuelled the anger of the handicapped persons who overpowered the main entry gate of the Headquarters and closed down other entry gates from inside. No one was allowed to enter in the office building. All waited till 6.30 pm for Mayor’s arrival but returned after finding no office-bearer,” lamented the weeklong persons while narrating the entire sordid episode of disappointment.

The agitation was participated by Samiti President Giridhar Bhajbhuje, Raju Raut, Gajanan Domkawle, Balu Mandavkar, Meena Sharma, Ujwala Kharabe, Tilak Kanoje, Alka Bhajbhuje, Arti Waghmare, Yogita Dongre and several others.
