Latest Update: NMC Action at Poonam Chambers Meets Legal Roadblock as High Court Steps In
Nagpur: The Anti-Encroachment Department of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) launched enforcement action on Thursday, February 5, against illegal commercial activity operating from the basement of Poonam Chambers in Nagpur.
During the operation, civic teams began removing goods from shops reportedly functioning under the name “Poonam Bazaar.” Officials said the basement was being used for commercial purposes in violation of the approved building plan.
According to NMC authorities, clearing out shop material is only the first step. Once inspections are completed, stricter measures may follow against those found violating regulations.
Part of Citywide Anti-Encroachment Drive
The action forms part of NMC’s ongoing citywide campaign to eliminate illegal constructions and encroachments, aimed at easing traffic congestion and restoring pedestrian pathways.
Under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijit Chaudhary, the enforcement wing has deployed 15 teams across the city. Ten teams are operating zone-wise, while five special headquarters teams are targeting major encroachment hotspots.
Pedestrian Safety Takes Priority
Officials noted that in many areas, footpaths have been narrowed due to goods placed by vendors and shopkeepers, forcing pedestrians onto busy roads and creating safety risks. The current drive is expected to help reopen walkways and improve traffic flow.
Separate anti-encroachment squads are active in all ten civic zones, with central teams providing backup for larger operations.
Appeal for Cooperation
NMC has urged shop owners and street vendors to remove unauthorized extensions, avoid placing materials on footpaths, and cooperate with civic teams. Officials reiterated that footpaths are reserved for pedestrians and that encroachments inconvenience thousands of citizens daily.
The civic body also confirmed that inspections and enforcement will intensify in the coming days, maintaining a firm stance against illegal constructions and encroachments across the city.
