Nagpur: As the city gears up to welcome the New Year, the Nagpur Police have rolled out an extensive, technology-backed security arrangement aimed at ensuring peaceful and incident-free celebrations. From sniffer dogs and drones to widespread nakabandis, the police are leaving little to chance on December 31 night.
A massive force of around 2,500 personnel — ranging from constables to senior officers, including the Police Commissioner, will be deployed across Nagpur. The focus will be on curbing drug abuse, preventing drunk driving, safeguarding women, and keeping anti-social elements at bay.
Sniffer dogs to target drug menace
Police Commissioner Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal said the growing menace of drug consumption, especially during late-night celebrations, has been taken seriously. Three specially trained dog squads will be pressed into service to check vehicles and suspicious movement on city roads.
“These dogs are capable of detecting a wide range of narcotics, including ganja and synthetic drugs like mephedrone (MD),” Dr Singal said, adding that surprise checks will be carried out to deter offenders.
Eyes in the sky with drone surveillance
Adding a high-tech edge to the bandobast, mobile surveillance vehicles fitted with drone cameras will patrol the city. Drones will scan rooftops, secluded pockets, and vulnerable locations to detect illegal gatherings or unlawful activities.
The Police Commissioner warned that strict accountability would be fixed on the concerned police stations if any illicit activity goes unchecked.
131 nakabandis to curb drunk driving
To maintain law and order, police blockades will be erected at 131 strategic points across the city. Teams from local police stations, supported by traffic police, will conduct intensive checks, particularly targeting drunk driving and reckless behaviour.
Enhanced safety measures at checkpoints
Learning from past incidents, police barricades will be fitted with blinking lights to ensure visibility during night hours. Last year, a vehicle had rammed into a poorly visible barricade, prompting authorities to upgrade safety measures. Government ambulances will also remain on standby at nakabandi points to provide immediate medical assistance if required.
Zero tolerance for anti-social acts
Senior officers have directed field staff to ensure that families and citizens can celebrate without fear. Anyone indulging in hooliganism or creating nuisance will be detained immediately. Special patrolling teams will keep a close watch on popular hotspots such as Futala Lake and the Dharampeth area, which usually see heavy crowds on New Year’s Eve.
Women’s safety under special watch
Reiterating a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women, Dr Singal said Police Inspectors have been instructed to act swiftly and firmly against incidents of molestation, eve-teasing, or harassment. Dedicated teams, including the Traffic Police, Quick Response Teams (QRTs), Riot Control Police (RCP), and staff from all police stations, will be part of the comprehensive security grid.
With heightened vigilance and a strong on-ground presence, the Nagpur Police aim to ensure that the New Year celebrations remain safe, orderly, and joyous for all.
