Nagpur: Barely days after assuming charge as Nagpur Police Commissioner, Vishwas Nangre Patil has begun laying the groundwork for a comprehensive crime-control strategy, with a detailed assessment of the city’s crime profile taking precedence over immediate enforcement measures.
Rather than rushing into announcements, the new Police Commissioner has spent the past two days conducting an intensive review of Nagpur’s geographical layout, police jurisdictions and crime patterns. Using detailed city maps and crime data, he is identifying vulnerable pockets, habitual crime zones and policing challenges before finalising a long-term action plan.
Interacting with mediapersons, Nangre Patil said understanding the city’s unique law-and-order dynamics was essential before implementing targeted policing measures. He stressed that an effective strategy could only be formulated after thoroughly analysing local crime trends and the issues confronting different police station limits.
Nagpur occupies a strategically important position in Maharashtra’s policing landscape. Besides being the home city of the Chief Minister and the Home Minister, it witnesses frequent visits by constitutional authorities and senior political leaders, making VVIP security one of the Commissionerate’s key responsibilities after Mumbai and Pune.
At the same time, the city continues to grapple with several organised and street-level crimes. Allegations of illegal betting networks, hawala transactions, narcotics trafficking, unauthorised hookah parlours and other unlawful activities have persisted over the years. Police records have also reflected an increase in violent crimes, with murders and attempted murders frequently triggered by minor disputes, posing a significant challenge to law enforcement.
In a stark reminder of the task ahead, two separate murder cases were reported in the city on the very day Nangre Patil assumed office and received the ceremonial guard of honour, underscoring the magnitude of the law-and-order challenges awaiting the new Police Commissioner.
Officials said the Commissioner intends to focus on dismantling organised illegal activities, curbing street crime and strengthening intelligence-based policing. He has also emphasised greater public participation in crime prevention and announced plans to introduce the ‘Jagruk Nagpurkar’ initiative, modelled on the successful ‘Jagruk Mumbaikar’ campaign implemented during his tenure in Mumbai. The programme aims to encourage citizens to become active partners in maintaining law and order by promptly reporting suspicious activities and assisting police through community engagement.
Anti-corruption message faces an early challenge
Even as the new Police Commissioner outlined his vision for transparent policing, his anti-corruption message faced an immediate test.
Addressing officers and personnel shortly after taking charge, Nangre Patil had delivered a clear warning against corruption within the police force. He urged officers to maintain the highest standards of integrity and specifically cautioned them against accepting illegal gratification, stressing that no police personnel should invite action from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
However, within a day of his address, the Commissionerate suffered an embarrassing blow when a police staff member attached to Ganeshpeth Police Station was allegedly caught by the Anti-Corruption Bureau while accepting a bribe.
The incident has brought the spotlight on the Commissioner’s resolve to enforce accountability within the force, with observers watching closely to see how the new police chief balances his campaign against organised crime with his commitment to rooting out corruption from within the department.
