Nagpur: Teachers and students had a narrow escape as slab of an NMC school in Nagpur collapsed due to incessant rains lashing the city. The incident took place at NMC’s Kanchanmala School in Surendragarh of West Nagpur. When the slab collapsed, the school was functioning. The building is dilapidated but still the school was being run by NMC from there. The matter was brought to light by Abhijit Jha, Convener of Janahit, a voluntary organisation.

According to reports, the school building is in a shabby condition. Cracks have appeared at several places and rainwater leaks into classes. The students have no adequate place to sit in the classes. The studentys and teachers are forced to spend an uneasy time due to the poor condition of the school.

Despite dilapidated building of NMC’s Kanchanmala School since past many years, classes of nearby Hindi Middle School were shifted to this building some one year ago. As the number of students increased, the affairs of the school became unmanageable.

Reports further said that last year also, some portion of a Hindi School had collapsed. The building was later sealed by the authorities.

Jha lamented that despite the risky building of the school, classes are being conducted in the building. The move poses life risks to students and teachers. Jha demanded that till the new building is constructed, the classes in NMC’s Kanchanmala School should be shifted to other safer place.
