Nagpur/Raipur: Did SBL Energy Limited export explosives that were later used in Sudan’s civil war? The question has come into focus after the United States imposed sanctions on the company and its CEO, alleging they supplied more than 200 shipments of explosives and related material to a Sudanese entity linked to the country’s military.
The U.S. claims that explosives manufactured by SBL Energy Limited were exported through a company associated with Sudan’s military establishment and were ultimately used in aerial bomb attacks carried out by the Sudanese Armed Forces. The sanctions target both the company’s CEO, Alok Choudhari, and the company itself.
According to U.S. authorities, the supplies allegedly helped sustain military operations during Sudan’s ongoing conflict, contributing to a worsening humanitarian crisis.
SBL Energy, however, has denied the allegations. The company has stated that it manufactures and exports only industrial explosives for legitimate civilian applications such as mining, quarrying and infrastructure projects, and that all exports were made under approvals issued by the Government of India.
The U.S. sanctions freeze any U.S.-based assets of the designated individuals and entities and generally prohibit American persons and businesses from dealing with them. As of now, there has been no official response from the Indian government regarding the sanctions.
