Nagpur: Vinayak Shastri Arvikar, Nagpur’s renowned Sanskrit scholar who was felicitated at the hands of Kanchi Kamakoti Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati, left for his heavenly abode in the small hours of Sunday.
Arvikar, popularly known as Arvikar Shastri as a mark of respect for his knowledge of Vedas, Puranas, and Sanskrit scriptures, breathed his last at his residence 126- A, Pande Layout, Khamla. He was 87. He is survived by his sons Sudhanshu and Bhushan, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, relatives, and a large family of admirers. His mortal remains were consigned to flames as per Vedic rituals at Sahakar Nagar Ghat.
Vinayak Shastri Arvikar had retired as Branch Manager of Maharashtra State Co-operative Bank. He also taught Sanskrit at Bhonsala Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya and Saraswati Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya. He was a scholar in ‘Yajniki’ and ‘Vaidiki’, and was known for insights into Vedas, Puranas, and Sanskrit scriptures. He was a member of Nagpur University’s Board of Studies.
‘Vedshastrasampanna’ Vinayak Shastri Arvikar had a great following and he had delivered discourses and lectures on ‘Shrimad Bhagwat’. Pandit Kaka Dhanagare had honoured Arvikar with the coveted title ‘Bhagwatalankar’. Arvikar was also the chief priest of ‘Ayutchandi Yajna’ and was felicitated at the hands of Kanchi Kamakoti Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati. He was a giant in Vedic and Sanskrit scholarship and had dedicated his life to the service of ‘Bhagwat Dharma’.
