Nagpur: The Second Capital of Maharashtra, Nagpur, is expanding rapidly — but so is its traffic, at nearly double the pace. The impact is clearly visible: Long queues of vehicles and frequent traffic jams have become a daily ordeal for citizens, especially in key parts of the city. While the administration continues to make efforts to manage the situation, a major update offers hope for lasting relief.

To tackle the worsening congestion, the Nagpur civic administration has begun drafting its 2025 City Mobility Plan (CMP). The focus is squarely on enhancing road infrastructure and easing traffic flow through strategic interventions. One of the central proposals under discussion is the construction of eight new overbridges and underpasses at some of the most congested junctions in the city.

Focus on long-term solutions

A dedicated team has been formed to develop the CMP, factoring in Nagpur’s growing population and future urban expansion. In its preliminary report, the team has mapped out the worst-hit traffic zones and recommended actionable measures, including construction of new Rail Over Bridges (ROBs) and Rail Under Bridges (RUBs) to streamline the movement of vehicles.

The total projected cost of these infrastructural upgrades stands at Rs 510 crore, and the implementation will be done in three phases:

• Phase 1: Construction of two major flyovers at an estimated cost of Rs 90 crore.

• Phase 2: Development of two ROBs and RUBs with an allocation of Rs 100 crore.

• Phase 3: Completion of remaining proposed works and fine-tuning of city traffic systems.

Areas identified for new infrastructure

The CMP team has identified eight traffic-heavy zones that will benefit from the new overbridges and underpasses. These include:

• RBI Square

• Ajni Square

• Koradi Naka

• New Katol Naka

• Kamptee

• Medical Square

• Manewada

• Tathagat Square

According to the report, these intersections are becoming increasingly unmanageable, with citizens frequently stuck in bottlenecks and gridlocks. The recommended infrastructure will not only decongest these areas but also enhance safety and reduce travel time.

Looking ahead

With traffic in Nagpur showing signs of spiralling out of control, the CMP is a timely and strategic initiative aimed at future-proofing the city’s road network. Once implemented, the project is expected to significantly improve commuting conditions and bring long-awaited relief to lakhs of daily commuters.
