Nagpur’s Alfiya grabs national boxing gold

Nagpur: City’s pride Alfiya Pathan grabbed a gold medal in the 9th Elite Men’s & Women’s National Boxing Championships that concluded at Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

Alfiya Pathan of Central Railway,Nagpur won gold in 80+ kgs event. This is for the first time in history that Maharashtra State has earned a gold medal in the senior girls category. Alfiya had a great tournament as she bamboozled her opponents on the way to the title.

In the pre-quarters, Alfiya defeated Shyama of Odisha by RSC. In the quarter-final, she thumped Shivani of Delhi 5-0 and then scored an identical win over Ritika of Haryana in the semis. The final against Manjit Kaur of Punjab was no different as Alfiya recorded a 5-0 verdict in her favour once again. Alfiya qualified for the event with a gold in the All India Railways Boxing Championship that was hosted at Guwahati in Assam. She gives credit of her success to coaches Ganesh Purohit, Girish Pawar, Central Railway’s coach Manoj Kumar and Olympian Lalit.

She got her basic training under Purohit at Divisional Sports Complex in Mankapur. In a sweet gesture, Alfiya Pathan put her gold medal around her childhood coach Ganesh Purohit’s neck. Members of Nagpur District and Nagpur City Boxing Association have congratulated her and extended their best wishes. Alfiya’s next target is the upcoming Asian Championship that will be held in March and will be followed by World Championships.
