Nagpur: Nagpur’s public transport system reached a major milestone on Tuesday as the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) Aapli Bus service registered its highest-ever single-day ridership, ferrying 2,12,663 passengers across the city and adjoining areas.
The record was accompanied by another significant achievement, 80,058 commuters, nearly 38 per cent of the total passengers, opted for digital ticketing, highlighting the rapid shift towards cashless travel in the city.
Civic officials said the growing use of digital payment platforms has streamlined ticketing operations by reducing boarding time, improving fare collection and enhancing overall service efficiency. The trend also aligns with the NMC’s broader vision of building a smarter, technology-driven urban transport network.
Among all routes, the Pardi–Hingna Gramin Hospital corridor emerged as the busiest, registering the highest passenger traffic during the day. Other heavily patronised routes included Sitabuldi Bus Terminal–Prakash Nagar (Khaperkheda), Aapli Bus Terminal–Takalghat, Aapli Bus Terminal–Tekadi Bus Stop, and Pipla Fata–Friends Colony, reflecting robust demand on both city and suburban stretches.
The city’s major transit hubs also witnessed heavy commuter movement. Panchsheel Square, Maharajbagh, Butibori MIDC Gate, Chhatrapati Square, NIT/LIC Square, and Sitabuldi Bus Terminal remained the busiest boarding and interchange points throughout the day.
With a fleet of 730 buses operating on 124 primary routes and 230 feeder routes, the Aapli Bus network has become the backbone of Nagpur’s public transport system, connecting residential areas with commercial hubs, industrial estates, educational institutions and suburban localities.
Officials attributed the surge in ridership to expanded connectivity, improved service frequency and the increasing preference among office-goers, students and industrial workers for affordable and reliable public transport.
Encouraged by the growing acceptance of digital payments, the NMC plans to further promote cashless ticketing as part of its smart mobility initiative. Officials believe wider adoption of digital transactions will not only improve operational efficiency but also minimise cash handling, reduce paper ticket usage and offer commuters a faster, more seamless travel experience.
The record-breaking figures underline Aapli Bus’s growing role in Nagpur’s urban mobility landscape and reflect the city’s steady transition towards a modern, efficient and digitally enabled public transport system.
