Nagpur: A promising young life was cut short in Nagpur this week as Pulkit Devgade, a 13-year-old Class 8 student and avid volleyball player, tragically died by suicide at his residence in Bhende Layout, Swavalambi Nagar. The incident, which came to light around 7:30 pm on Monday, underscores the profound emotional toll that prolonged domestic discord, parental separation, and financial instability can inflict on children. Sonegaon Police have registered a case of accidental death and launched a detailed investigation.
The tragedy unfolded while Pulkit was alone at home. His mother, who is employed at a private showroom, returned from work in the evening to find the house locked from the inside. After receiving no response to her repeated calls, she sought assistance from alarmed neighbours who forced open the door. Pulkit was found hanging from a ceiling fan using a piece of cotton cloth. He was rushed immediately to a hospital, where attending medical professionals declared him dead upon arrival.
According to statements given to the Sonegaon police by the boy’s mother, Pulkit was an intelligent student with bright prospects in sports. However, multiple compounding pressures severely impacted his mental well-being. A bitter marital dispute between his parents had been pending in court for an extended period, deeply distressing the teenager.
The boy’s father, who works in the MIDC area, was allegedly irregular in paying maintenance. This left the 40-year-old mother struggling single-handedly to manage household finances and her son’s educational expenses. Beyond financial default, the father reportedly showed little interest in meeting or speaking with the teenager. This emotional neglect deeply upset Pulkit, who frequently confided his anxieties and anguish to his mother.
Sonegaon Police have formally registered a case of accidental death based on the detailed statement provided by the grieving mother.
Investigators are thoroughly examining all aspects of the domestic environment, financial friction, and court proceedings to ascertain the exact circumstances and triggers leading to the boy’s fatal step.
