Nagpur: In a major crackdown on the alleged smuggling of foreign-origin gold through the railway network, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) jointly seized 1.242 kg of foreign gold worth ₹1,96,34,307 from the Howrah-Mumbai Duronto Express. Two suspected gold smugglers were arrested during the operation conducted between Bhandara and Nagpur.
According to the information available, the action was carried out following a specific tip-off received by the RPF Crime Branch. The seizure is being described as the second major operation against alleged foreign gold smuggling through trains within a week.

Joint operation based on secret information
The RPF Crime Branch reportedly received information that two passengers were travelling on the Howrah-Mumbai Duronto Express carrying foreign-origin gold.
Following the tip-off, RPF teams from Nagpur and Raipur alerted officials of the DRI. A joint team subsequently began monitoring passengers on the train.
When the train was travelling between Bhandara and Nagpur, the team noticed two passengers behaving suspiciously in coach B-12.
The officials questioned the two passengers, but their responses reportedly failed to satisfy the investigating team. The officials then conducted a search of their belongings.
Seven gold biscuits and one gold bar recovered
During the search, officials recovered seven foreign-origin gold biscuits and one gold bar from the possession of the two suspects.
The total weight of the seized gold was 1.242 kilograms, while its estimated market value was put at ₹1,96,34,307.
Following the seizure, the two accused were handed over to the DRI for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Investigation into source of gold underway
The DRI has now taken up the investigation and is questioning the two arrested suspects.
Investigators are trying to determine where the foreign gold originated, who supplied it and to whom it was allegedly being transported.
The agency is also expected to investigate the suspected network behind the operation, including possible suppliers, intermediaries and intended recipients.
