Nagpur: Even as Maharashtra’s political calendar is jammed with local body elections, Governor Acharya Devvrat has issued a formal notification confirming that the Winter Session of the state legislature will kick off in Nagpur on 8 December. The duration of the session hasn’t been disclosed, adding a small cloud of suspense to an already charged atmosphere.
The expectation is clear: this session won’t be calm. The opposition is gearing up to corner the government over delayed or inadequate compensation for monsoon-related crop losses, and the timing of the session—right in the middle of civic elections—adds another layer of friction.
Maharashtra is currently deep in local self-government polls. Elections for 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats are scheduled for 2 December, with counting the next day. Soon after, notifications for district council and municipal corporation polls are expected in early December. Because of this busy election schedule, many believed the Nagpur session might be postponed. The Governor’s notification has shut that door.
Meanwhile, the state government has begun the annual migration of its machinery to the state’s second capital. Ministerial offices and residences are being shifted temporarily to Nagpur. The Secretariat will start operating from the city in the first week of December, which means political traffic in the city is about to surge.
Security drills, logistics planning, accommodation blocks, and transport coordination are already in motion. The legislature secretariat has issued fresh instructions to all members. Extra security deployment is expected in and around the Vidhan Bhavan, and there may be a bump in rail and air services as the city braces for the seasonal political influx.
