Nagpur to get crescent-shaped new Vidhan Bhavan complex

Rs 1,200 crore project to feature Assembly, Council halls, and a grand Central Hall; heritage structures to be preserved

Nagpur: Following the architectural inspiration of the new Parliament House in Delhi, Maharashtra’s winter capital Nagpur is set to get a new crescent-shaped Vidhan Bhavan complex. The ambitious project will transform the State’s legislative infrastructure while preserving the existing heritage buildings, sources said.

According to sources, the design of the new Vidhan Bhavan will be crescent-shaped and constructed within the existing legislative premises. As part of the project, the temporary camp offices and barracks of various political parties, including the Congress and BJP, will be demolished to make space for the new structure. However, the old Assembly and Legislative Council buildings, both classified as heritage structures, will remain untouched.

The proposed building will house three major components, a Central Hall at the base, the Assembly Hall on the first floor, and the Legislative Council Hall above it.

Officials revealed that the upcoming delimitation of constituencies based on the new census may lead to an increase in the number of MLAs and MLCs. Accordingly, the new halls will be designed with expanded seating capacity to accommodate the future strength of both Houses.

The Legislative Council offices currently operating within the complex will be shifted to a new Secretariat building that will be constructed on the premises of the Government Printing Press.

Central Hall to enable Budget sessions

For years, there has been a strong demand to hold not only the Winter Session but also the Budget Session of the Maharashtra Legislature in Nagpur. The absence of a Central Hall has been a key obstacle. Recognising this need, Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar had directed officials to include a Central Hall in the redevelopment plan. Acting on his directive, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared, paving the way for execution.

The entire project is estimated to cost Rs 1,200 crore. In addition to the new Vidhan Bhavan, four buildings of seven storeys each will be constructed to support administrative and ancillary functions. The proposal has already been submitted to the government, and once approved, the tender process will commence.

Heritage building to become museum

As part of the redevelopment plan, the existing heritage Vidhan Bhavan building will be converted into a museum showcasing the journey of Maharashtra’s legislature, from the first Assembly session to the present day. Meanwhile, the current Assembly Hall is proposed to be converted into a community centre.

With this project, Nagpur, the Second Capital of Maharashtra, is poised to get a state-of-the-art legislative complex that blends modern architecture with historical legacy, reaffirming its status as a true seat of governance.
