
Nagpur: The Tehsil Police have arrested a 52-year-old man for stealing silver ornaments from two Hanuman temples in Nagpur, recovering stolen silver worth Rs 84,000.
According to police, the incident occurred on January 15, 2026, between 6 pm and 6.30 pm, within the limits of Tehsil police station. An unidentified person entered the Shri Sankatmochan Hanuman Temple at Timki through an open door and, taking advantage of a moment when devotees were not attentive, allegedly stole a silver tilak weighing around 250 grams from the Hanuman idol.
Following a complaint lodged by the temple trustee and local resident Chetan Kisanlal Basaiye (47), a case was registered at Tehsil Police Station under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against an unknown accused.
During parallel investigations, officers from Crime Branch Unit No. 6 conducted a technical analysis and, acting on reliable inputs, identified and detained the accused, Subhash Sukhdev Zade (52), a resident of Telephone Exchange Square, Lakadganj, Nagpur. During interrogation, Zade confessed to committing the theft at the Timki temple.
Further questioning revealed that the accused was also involved in another temple theft under Panchpaoli police station limits, where he allegedly stole a silver jaw ornament from the idol at Tandapeth Hanuman Temple. In total, he admitted to committing thefts at two temples.
Police recovered silver ingots weighing approximately 350 grams, valued at Rs 84,000, from the accused. He was handed over to Tahsil police along with the seized property for further legal proceedings. Further investigation is underway.
The successful operation was carried out under the guidance of Police Commissioner Ravindra Kumar Singal, Joint Commissioner of Police Navinchandra Reddy, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Vasant Pardeshi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Rahul Maknikar, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Narendra Hivre. The team included PI Bharat Karade, API Sachin Gaikwad, PSI Rahul Rote, along with several officers and constables from Crime Branch Unit No. 6.
