Nagpur: In a remarkable turnaround for road safety, Nagpur has recorded a sharp decline in fatal road accidents and deaths in 2025, a development largely attributed to the aggressive enforcement and technology-driven ‘Smart Traffic Police’ initiative, supported by focused operations under ‘Operation U-Turn’. The efforts are being led by Commissioner of Police Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal, whose team has intensified road discipline and surveillance across the city.

As per data compiled by the Traffic Branch for the period January 1 to December 3, the city witnessed one of the steepest reductions in accident-related deaths in recent years.

Fatal accidents

• 2024: 307

• 2025: 231

• Decrease: 76 cases (24.75%)

Road deaths

• 2024: 324

• 2025: 245

• Decrease: 79 deaths (24.38%)

Serious and minor injury crashes also registered a downward trend:

• Serious accidents: 448 (2024) → 439 (2025)

• Minor accidents: 342 (2024) → 302 (2025)

Interestingly, non-injury accident reports increased slightly, which police say indicates improved reporting systems and stronger on-ground patrolling.

Technology at the core of enforcement

With Nagpur struggling under swelling vehicle numbers and rising congestion, the police introduced multiple smart-monitoring mechanisms supported by upgraded manpower deployment.

Key components of the initiative include:

• Reflective jackets and blinker-collars for night-duty personnel

• Traffic batons for enhanced control in low visibility

• CCTV networks and smart camera surveillance across major corridors

• Instant e-challans for violations including:

• Wrong-side driving

• Triple-seat riding

• Stunt biking

• Jumping signals

• Drunk driving

• Under-age driving

• Data-based tracking of repeat offenders

To prevent road choking, illegal parking outside markets, hospitals, commercial zones and bus stops is being aggressively tackled with vehicle towing drives.

Acting on Commissioner Dr. Singal’s directives, dedicated night squads have been deployed at major junctions and accident-prone locations such as:

• Airport Road

• RBI Square

• Chhatrapati Square

• Variety Square

• Other high-traffic corridors

These teams specifically target stunt riding, wrong-side driving and obstructive parking, imposing immediate penalties.

Operation U-Turn delivers crucial results

At a recent review meeting chaired by Joint Commissioner of Police Naveenchandra Reddy, senior officials including DCP Traffic Lohit Matani, ACP Mahesh Thakur, and inspectors from all 12 divisions analysed enforcement statistics and discussed further strengthening of night deployment. Officers collectively noted that Operation U-Turn alone has contributed to saving nearly 80 lives compared to the previous year.

Police appeal

The Nagpur Police have urged citizens to support the campaign by observing road rules and prioritising safety:

• Always wear helmets and seatbelts

• Avoid illegal parking and rash driving

• Follow signal discipline

• Cooperate with enforcement personnel

Police officials reiterated that continued public cooperation is critical to ensure Nagpur’s transformation into a safer, smoother and smarter traffic model city.
