Nagpur: A 28-year-old man accused of attempting to rob an elderly woman after allegedly entering her home disguised as a delivery worker died under unclear circumstances after being taken into police custody in Nagpur’s Beltarodi area.
The deceased has been identified as Sumedh Rajendra Gajbhiye, a resident of Narsala. He was allegedly caught by the woman’s son and neighbours after attempting to snatch a chain from a 61-year-old woman at Prithviraj Society.

The incident took place at around 2:30 pm on Tuesday. According to police, Sumedh arrived at the society on a motorcycle along with his alleged accomplice, Deepak Patil. The two were reportedly wearing T-shirts resembling those worn by food delivery workers.
Allegedly Entered House on Delivery Pretext
Police said the two allegedly approached the residence of 61-year-old Usha Devidas Dharmik and got the door opened on the pretext of delivering a parcel.
According to the allegation, Sumedh entered the house after the door was opened and allegedly threatened the woman with a knife while attempting to snatch her chain.
The woman raised an alarm, following which her son reached the spot and allegedly caught Sumedh. Neighbours also gathered after hearing the commotion and surrounded the two youths.
Beltarodi Police subsequently reached the spot and took Sumedh into custody. Police said that during preliminary questioning, he allegedly admitted involvement in the attempted robbery and claimed that the stolen property was to be handed over to his accomplice.
Health Deteriorated During Medical Examination
Police later took Sumedh for a medical examination. During the process, his condition reportedly deteriorated and he became unconscious.
He was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following his death, allegations and discussion emerged that Sumedh may have been assaulted after being caught. Police have denied that he was beaten or assaulted in custody.
The exact cause of death is yet to be established. Police are awaiting the postmortem report, which is expected to provide further clarity.
The investigation into the attempted robbery and the circumstances surrounding Sumedh’s death is underway.
