Nagpur: The Swadhinta Gram Vikas and Peace Foundation organised a Religious Economy Study Sessionin Nagpur under the leadership of Nationalist Economist CA Shwetali Thakare, in the presence of CA B. C. Bhartia, National President, CAIT, and Sthapati Shri Abhishek Deshpande.
The session was graced by Hon’ble Minister Shri Ashish Jaiswal, who appreciated the initiative and emphasised that Rural Economy and Religious Economy are among the strongest pillars of India’s development, creating livelihoods, preserving cultural heritage and strengthening the nation’s social fabric. He called for greater research and policy focus on these sectors.
Addressing the gathering, CA Shwetali Thakare said that, according to the research framework presented during the session, India’s Religious Economy is estimated to contribute nearly ₹10 lakh crore annually (around 4% of GDP) and support the livelihoods of nearly 2.5 crore people. She observed that the biggest beneficiaries are small traders, street vendors, artisans, transport operators, hospitality businesses and rural entrepreneurs. She emphasised that Religious Economy should be systematically measured, researched and strengthened as an important pillar of Indian Economics.
CA B. C. Bhartia highlighted the economic impact of the Mahakumbh, explaining how millions of small businesses and local vendors benefited, making it one of the finest examples of India’s circular and grassroots economy.

Sthapati Shri Abhishek Deshpande cited the example of Pintu Koli, whose business reportedly achieved a turnover of nearly ₹30 crore during the Mahakumbh, a success story later mentioned by Hon’ble Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He said India must now formally study and promote this indigenous economic model.
Concluding the session, CA Shwetali Thakare proposed the concept of Religious Social Responsibility (RSR), on the lines of CSR, to encourage transparency, sustainability and responsible management of faith-based institutions while promoting trust, social harmony and inclusive prosperity.
The discussion saw active participation from Shri Sameer Kulkarni, Shri Aditya Vyas, Shri Anup Huddar, Naresh Arsade, Shri Unmesh Dhote, Shri Kishore Dharashivkar, CA R. K.
