Nagpur Railway Station’s West Gate to get underground parking facility in 2–3 days

Nagpur: Commuters arriving at Nagpur Railway Station can now expect some relief from the traffic congestion that has plagued its western entrance for nearly four years, with the station’s new underground parking facility becoming operational on October 20.

Developed by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), the facility is the first component of the ambitious Rs 487.77-crore Nagpur Railway Station Redevelopment Project to become operational. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the redevelopment project on December 11, 2022.

Constructed over 44 months, the underground facility has been handed over to the Nagpur Division of Central Railway. It provides dedicated parking for cars and two-wheelers, while a separate access-controlled zone has been designated for picking up and dropping off passengers.

Up to 2 hours Rs 10

2 to 6 hours Rs 15

6 to 12 hours Rs 20

12 to 24 hours Rs 35

Beyond 24 hours Rs 35 per day

Pick-up and drop zone: Rs 1,000 penalty for violations

A separate access-controlled pick-up and drop-off facility has been developed alongside Cement Road, with capacity to accommodate approximately 120 four-wheelers.

The parking charges for four-wheelers in this zone are:

Duration Charges

Up to 1 hour Rs 50

1 to 2 hours Rs 100

Beyond 2 hours: Not permitted; Rs 1,000 penalty per vehicle, with towing

The pick-up and drop zone is exclusively meant for four-wheelers. Two-wheelers and passenger-carrying commercial vehicles, including autorickshaws, taxis, buses and minibuses, are not permitted to enter this area.

Vehicles cannot remain in the zone beyond 120 minutes. Those found overstaying will be towed away and charged a flat penalty of Rs 1,000 per vehicle, according to the prescribed rules.

Modern infrastructure and clear signage

The underground parking facility features white pillars, LED lighting, fire-safety pipelines and ventilation fans. Signboards in Marathi, Hindi and English, with white lettering on blue backgrounds, guide motorists towards designated areas, including car and two-wheeler parking, lifts and exit points.

Directional signage on the approach road uses separate arrows to guide vehicles towards the pick-up and drop zone, two-wheeler parking and car parking, helping prevent confusion and traffic conflicts at the entrance.

The opening of the facility marks a significant step in the redevelopment of Nagpur Railway Station. By separating long-duration parking from passenger pick-up and drop-off operations, the new arrangement is expected to improve vehicle movement around the station and make access more convenient for passengers.
