Nagpur: The Nagpur police reportedly rejected an RTI query regarding the security provided to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the expenses incurred on it.
The Special Branch, which provides security to the RSS, comes under the Police Commissionerate and is exempt from RTI Act under Section 24 (4). An activist Lallan Kishore Singh had sought information about rules under which the police provide security to the RSS and its chief, especially when the organization is not even registered. Singh also asked how much has been spent on security so far and whether the RSS has reimbursed the State for these expenses.
Singh claims that the police’s reply, which was dated April 26, was sent to him on May 8 via WhatsApp by a messenger who came to his home in the Hingna area. The police’s refusal to answer Singh’s query came after a long ordeal. Singh had previously attempted to obtain information under the RTI Act two years ago, but the police questioned him, prompting him to file a case in the High Court. The police later told the court that Singh would not be questioned again, and the case was dismissed.
In 2021, Singh requested information from the State’s Home Ministry, which was then forwarded to the State Intelligence Department. The query later reached the Kotwali Police Station in Nagpur, and Singh was summoned for questioning by the traffic police during this time.
Singh filed another RTI query after the police’s submission that he would not be questioned again, but it was subsequently turned down. The rejection of Singh’s query has raised questions about the transparency and accountability of the state’s security apparatus, particularly in relation to the RSS, which is not a registered organization.
