Nagpur: Chemists and medicine traders in Nagpur staged a strong protest on Wednesday against the growing trend of online medicine sales, demanding an immediate ban on what they termed as “unregulated digital drug business.” The agitation witnessed participation from a large number of pharmacists and medical store owners at Samvidhan Chowk, while several medicine shops across the city remained shut in support of the protest.
Raising slogans against online pharmaceutical platforms, the protesters claimed that unchecked online medicine sales are severely affecting local medical businesses and pushing small pharmacy owners towards financial distress. Traders alleged that the rapid expansion of online pharmacies is threatening the survival of traditional medical stores that have been serving citizens for years.
The protesting chemists also expressed concern over the alleged sale of medicines without proper medical prescriptions through online platforms. They warned that such practices could endanger public health and lead to misuse of medicines, including antibiotics and other sensitive drugs. According to the protesters, the absence of strict monitoring in online medicine delivery poses a serious risk to patient safety.
During the demonstration at Samvidhan Chowk, traders urged the government to introduce stringent regulations on online medicine sales and immediately curb what they described as uncontrolled and unsafe distribution of medicines through digital platforms.
The protest also affected medicine availability in several parts of the city as many medical stores remained closed during the agitation, causing inconvenience to citizens. However, the chemists maintained that the protest was necessary not only to protect their business interests but also to safeguard public health and ensure responsible medicine distribution.
