NAGPUR: Dr Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay, the newly appointed Commissioner of Police (CP) of Nagpur, took charge of his office on Wednesday. Dr Upadhyay is among the dozen of IPS officer transferred by the State government across Maharashtra this week.

The new CP, Dr B K Upadhyay, soon after assuming office, made it clear that though he believed in the use of technology, he had more faith on ground policing. He assured that the people of Nagpur would soon see the effect of ground policing. Stating that cops had stick in one hand and love on the other, Dr Upadhyay asked people to choose between the two.

Dr Upadhyay has earlier served in Nagpur as DCP (Traffic), Upper Commissioner of Police (Crime) and Police Superintendent (Rural). He has in-depth knowledge and understanding of Nagpur traffic and crime world. He said he intended to control criminal cases and build trust for police among people. He said he would seek suggestions from NGOs and self-help groups to check the increasing crime graph.

Dr Upadhyay stated that he wanted to work in the direction of displaying the sensitive side of police so that trust and confidence could be instilled in the minds of people. He said he knew about the rising crime graph of Nagpur and especially economic and cyber offenses. He also said that when police officers apart from the inspector rank were seen on the roads, people feel safe and criminals are terrorized.

Narrating his experiences of working in jail administration, Dr Upadhyay said that if young criminals were counselled properly, they desist from committing crimes. He said every effort would be made to control crime cases in the city.

The appointment of Dr Upadhyay as Nagpur’s new CP has gained significance as this is the hometown of Chief Minister Devendra Phadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Meanwhile, outgoing CP Dr K Venkatesham, while talking informally to media persons at the CP office, thanked the media for their support during his 23-month tenure as Nagpur CP. He also spoke about the works done during his tenure. ACP Shivaji Bodke also thanked the media persons present on the occasion.
