Nagpur: In preparation for the upcoming monsoon season, Nagpur Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhary has mandated the appointment of emergency officers, known as ‘apadamitras’, across the city’s ten zones. These officers will be responsible for overseeing response and rescue operations during the monsoon.

During a review meeting with senior officials of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Wednesday, Chaudhary emphasized the importance of proactive measures to minimize disruption and ensure the safety of residents. He instructed each department to implement preventive strategies, including the immediate structural audit of old bridges and a thorough survey of potentially dangerous buildings, which will be issued notices if found unsafe.

Chaudhary stressed the urgency of addressing areas prone to waterlogging by ensuring effective drainage systems are in place. He highlighted that low-lying settlements often experience significant water accumulation during heavy rains, necessitating the swift action of ‘apadamitras’ for efficient disaster management.

Additionally, Chaudhary called for an urgent survey of trees that might fall and potholes that need filling before the monsoon begins. He directed assistant zonal commissioners to have all necessary machinery and equipment ready to respond to potential threats posed by heavy rainfall.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the NMC to enhance monsoon preparedness and safeguard citizens from the adverse effects of heavy downpours.
