Nagpur: Environmental activists and local residents have protested against the felling of trees for development work in the London Street area of Nagpur. Residents gathered at the site and staged demonstrations demanding that the tree cutting be stopped. As part of the protest, they hugged the trees in a ‘Chipko movement’ to oppose the felling.
Environmental activists questioned whether it was appropriate to destroy greenery for development work. Residents are angry that trees that have helped maintain the area’s environmental balance for many years are being cut down in the name of development. “Development is necessary, but if it comes at the cost of trees, what is the purpose of such development?” the protesters asked.
After learning that tree felling was under way, environmental activists reached the site. They hugged the trees in an attempt to save them from being cut down. Some residents also held placards and raised slogans against the felling.
