Nagpur: The iconic Futala Musical Fountain will come alive in the vibrant hues of the Indian tricolour this Independence Day, offering Nagpur a first glimpse of its state-of-the-art lighting and sound system as restoration of the long-silent attraction enters its final phase.
On the evening of August 15, the fountain will host a special light-and-sound presentation featuring a carefully curated patriotic musical medley synchronized with 250 high-performance LED lights imported from Italy. Although the display will not include water effects and will remain closed to the public due to ongoing restoration work, it will serve as a milestone in the revival of one of the city’s most cherished landmarks.

The Independence Day presentation has been designed as a tribute to the nation, with the lighting choreography reflecting the colours of the national flag while patriotic songs play in the background.
According to Alphonse Roy, Technical Director of the Futala restoration project and an Emmy Award-winning cinematographer, the show will feature a medley of popular patriotic tracks, including “Jai Ho”, accompanied by dynamic lighting sequences.
“This will be a purely light-and-sound presentation. The fountain pumps are expected to arrive after August 15, so the water features will not be operational yet. The idea is to showcase the advanced lighting system while celebrating Independence Day,” Roy said.
Italian technology for perfect tricolour
At the heart of the new visual experience is an advanced lighting system comprising 250 custom-built RGBA LED fixtures imported from Italy.
Unlike conventional RGB lighting, these fixtures include an additional amber channel, enabling the system to reproduce richer and more accurate colours.
Roy explained that the amber component is particularly crucial in achieving the precise saffron shade of the Indian national flag while also producing cleaner whites without unwanted colour distortions.
“Light is not merely about brightness. The accuracy of every shade and how it reflects on water significantly enhances the visual experience,” he said.
The sophisticated lighting has been programmed to recreate the tricolour, saffron, white, green and navy blue, with exceptional colour fidelity.
World-class sound system installed
Complementing the visual spectacle is a premium outdoor sound system supplied by renowned German manufacturer d&b audiotechnik.
The system has been specially engineered for open-air environments, delivering crystal-clear audio across the Futala lakefront while minimizing sound spill into surrounding residential areas.
Roy said outdoor acoustics present unique challenges because there are no walls or ceilings to contain sound.
“Factors such as wind, atmospheric conditions, temperature and environmental noise must all be considered. The goal is to direct sound precisely towards the audience while maintaining exceptional audio quality,” he explained.
The Independence Day illumination also coincides with another important phase of the restoration project.
A Belgian fountain specialist is scheduled to arrive in Nagpur on August 15 and remain until August 27 to oversee specialized technical work. Meanwhile, pump components sourced from France are also expected to arrive later this month, paving the way for installation and integration of the fountain’s remaining mechanical systems.
Although the viewing gallery will remain closed and the full musical fountain will not yet be operational, Friday’s tricolour illumination is expected to offer a captivating preview of the world-class attraction taking shape.
With cutting-edge international technology, immersive sound, and precision lighting, the restored Futala Musical Fountain is poised to become one of Nagpur’s premier tourist attractions once it officially reopens.
