Nagpur: A 55-year-old man running a consultancy in Nagpur allegedly duped five job seekers of Rs 25.23 lakh by promising them employment and later threatening one of the victims when he demanded his money back.
The accused has been identified as Kiran Mahadeorao Hedau, resident of Chikhali-Kalamna area and operator of Shri Sai Consultancy at Khandwani Arcade near Ambedkar Chowk on CA Road, falling under Lakadganj police station limits.

According to the complaint filed by Nirbhay Motiram Raut (29), a resident of Vrindavan Nagar in Nandanvan, he was looking for a job when he came into contact with Hedau. The accused allegedly presented himself as someone capable of arranging employment and gradually won Raut’s confidence.
Police said that between January 1, 2024 and January 1, 2026, Hedau allegedly collected Rs 11 lakh from Raut through PhonePe and RTGS transactions, promising to secure him a job.
However, despite receiving the money, Hedau allegedly failed to arrange any employment. Whenever Raut followed up, the accused allegedly kept giving evasive replies and continued postponing the matter.
The situation took a more serious turn when Raut demanded that his money be returned. According to the complaint, Hedau allegedly threatened him, saying that he was a heart patient and that if anything happened to him, Raut would have to go to jail.
Four more victims emerge
During the inquiry into the complaint, police found that Raut was allegedly not the only person who had been targeted.
Hedau allegedly made similar promises of arranging jobs to four other persons and collected a total of Rs 14.23 lakh from them. Police said none of these victims was allegedly provided employment despite the payments.
The total amount allegedly collected from Raut and the four other victims thus stands at Rs 25,23,865.
The police suspect that the accused used the promise of employment to gain the confidence of job seekers and obtain money from them over a period of time.
Based on Raut’s complaint and the subsequent inquiry, Lakadganj Police registered a case against Hedau under Sections 318(3), 318(4), 316(2) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police said further investigation is underway to establish the complete extent of the alleged fraud, verify the financial transactions and determine whether more people were similarly duped by the accused.
Investigators are also expected to examine the records and operations of the consultancy to ascertain how many job seekers may have approached the accused and whether any other persons were involved in the alleged scheme.
