नागपुर में 19 वर्षीय सोशल मीडिया इन्फ्लुएंसर से ₹3 लाख की ठगी, अश्लील वीडियो से ब्लैकमेल

Nagpur: In a disturbing case of alleged cyber blackmail and organised extortion, a 19-year-old social media influencer from Nagpur was allegedly lured with the promise of a lucrative job, manipulated into an intimate online interaction and subsequently blackmailed with an obscene video to extort Rs 3 lakh. The accused allegedly threatened to circulate the video on social media, demanded Rs 10 lakh and issued death threats to force the young woman into submission.

The case has been registered by Tehsil police following the victim’s complaint, exposing the alleged misuse of online platforms, fake professional credentials and digitally recorded intimate interactions to trap and financially exploit a young woman.

Police have named several people allegedly linked to the case, with connections spanning Mohali, Chandigarh, Goa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Investigators are examining the individual roles of the accused, the movement of money and the possibility of a wider conspiracy.

Job offer allegedly used to gain victim’s trust

According to the complaint, the 19-year-old had been using various social media applications and educational websites for work and entertainment for the past few years. During this period, she allegedly came into contact with the accused through online platforms.

The prime accused, identified as Irfan Ali, allegedly introduced himself as a prominent businessman and a leader of a political organisation in Uttar Pradesh. He purportedly assured the young woman that he could arrange a good job for her, thereby gaining her confidence.

Under the pretext of employment opportunities, the accused allegedly obtained her personal documents online. Police are also investigating allegations that the documents were subsequently used elsewhere without proper authorisation.

Intimate video allegedly recorded without consent

The complaint further alleges that the accused gradually pressured the victim into engaging in explicit conversations over video calls. He allegedly persuaded her to participate in an intimate virtual interaction and secretly recorded the session using screen-recording technology.

The recorded material was subsequently allegedly turned into a weapon of coercion. The accused purportedly threatened to circulate the video on social media and expose the young woman publicly unless she paid the demanded amount.

The incident highlights the risks posed by manipulated online relationships in which promises of employment or professional assistance may be used to obtain personal information and exploit victims through intimate digital content.

Rs 10 lakh demand, Rs 3 lakh allegedly paid

According to the complaint, the accused demanded Rs 10 lakh while allegedly threatening to make the video viral and kill the victim. Fearing the consequences of the threats and the possible public circulation of the footage, the young woman allegedly paid Rs 3 lakh.

However, the threats reportedly continued even after the payment, prompting her to approach the police.

Investigators are now expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged payment, identify the recipients and establish whether the money was transferred directly or through intermediaries. The police will also have to determine how the recorded material was shared, stored or potentially circulated.

Multiple accused under scanner

The police record names Kiran Mittal, Payal Destiny, Irfan Ali, Virendra Rana and Nitin Jain, among others. Their alleged roles and connections are being examined as part of the investigation.

The geographical spread of the people named in the complaint has added another dimension to the probe. Investigators are looking into whether the accused acted individually or in coordination, and whether the alleged job offer, collection of documents, recording of the intimate interaction and subsequent extortion were interconnected parts of a planned operation.

The allegations concerning the unauthorised use of the victim’s documents are also being investigated to establish whether her personal information was misused for any other purpose.

Cyber evidence to be crucial

Tehsil police have registered an offence under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. Further investigation is underway.

Digital records, video-call data, electronic communications, financial transactions and other available evidence are likely to be important in establishing the sequence of events and determining the involvement of each person named in the complaint.

The case once again underlines how online platforms can be exploited to target young users through false employment promises, privacy violations and threats involving intimate content. Police investigations will now focus on establishing the allegations, tracing the alleged extortion trail and determining whether other individuals were involved.

The allegations against the named individuals remain subject to investigation and judicial determination.
