Nagpur: A state-level convention of the Maharashtra State Aided Tribal Ashram School Association was held in Nagpur, bringing together discussions on issues concerning ashram schools, managements and tribal students.
Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule attended the convention and stressed the need to provide tribal students with quality education, nutritious food, healthcare facilities, and access to AI and digital learning. He said ashram schools should not receive secondary treatment.

Maharashtra’s Tribal Development Department runs both government and aided ashram schools for tribal students. The department’s official website lists schemes covering education, nutrition, healthcare and other facilities for students in aided ashram schools.
Coordination Committee Proposed
Bawankule said the government was considering setting up a coordination committee comprising ashram school management representatives, the Tribal Development Department commissioner and secretary to address issues faced by institutions.
He also expressed confidence that regular monthly meetings could be held to review and resolve issues concerning ashram schools and students.
During the convention, representatives raised several demands, including stopping criminal action against institution heads without an inquiry, allowing schools to recruit teachers at the institutional level when suitable candidates are unavailable through the Pavitra Portal, filling Class IV posts on full pay scales, removing the 80-km admission condition, and increasing educational material and contingency grants for students.
New Office-Bearers Elected
Kishor Wankhede was unanimously elected as the state president of the association, while former MLA Tekchand Savarkar was elected as working president.
Around 500 institution heads and representatives from across Maharashtra attended the convention.
After the event, the newly elected office-bearers met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and submitted a memorandum outlining their pending demands.
