Nagpur Hospital Ransacked After Patient’s DeathNagpur: Tension erupted at a private hospital near Awasthi Chowk in Jafar Nagar, Nagpur, on Wednesday evening after the death of a heart patient, with his relatives and local residents allegedly vandalising the hospital and confronting the treating doctor.

The incident took place at A-Square Hospital, where 38-year-old Mohsin Khan, a resident of Jafar Nagar, had been admitted on Sunday after complaining of chest pain.

According to the report, Khan’s condition deteriorated and he suffered a heart attack during treatment. He subsequently died at the hospital. His family, however, alleged that the death resulted from negligence and claimed that timely medical treatment had not been provided.

Family alleges delay in treatment

The family alleged that after Khan was brought to the hospital, there was a delay in arranging appropriate treatment and that no doctor attended to him for several hours.

A contemporaneous report said the family claimed Khan was brought to the emergency ward around 11 am and alleged that a cardiologist arrived only later in the afternoon. The family also questioned why his ECG had not been assessed earlier. These allegations have not been independently established.

After Khan’s last rites on Monday, his relatives returned to the hospital on Wednesday seeking an explanation over the treatment and alleged delay.

Crowd gathers, hospital property damaged

The confrontation escalated when a large number of relatives and local residents gathered outside the hospital.

According to the report, the crowd raised slogans against the hospital and allegedly damaged property inside the premises. There was also an attempt to confront and assault the doctor, prompting police intervention.

Police from Mankapur Police Station reached the hospital after receiving information about the escalating situation. Officers intervened and eventually escorted the doctor out of the hospital under police protection.

Hospital denies negligence

Hospital authorities disputed the allegations of negligence.

Hospital director Dr Irshad Pathan said the patient had been brought in with a serious cardiac condition and that the main blood vessel on the left side of his heart was completely blocked.

According to the hospital’s account, Dr Shadman Ali handled the patient’s treatment and management, but the patient could not be saved. Dr Pathan also said that he was not present in the city at the time.

The hospital alleged that the patient’s relatives subsequently arrived with a crowd, attempted to assault the doctor and damaged hospital property. The management said it was initiating an FIR against those involved.

Police record statements

As tensions escalated, police brought the situation under control and took the doctor and some of the patient’s relatives to the police station for recording their statements.

A contemporaneous report stated that no offence had been registered at the time of its publication, while police were considering action over the alleged vandalism and disturbance.

The incident has once again raised concerns over confrontations between patients’ relatives and medical staff following deaths during treatment. Any allegation of medical negligence would need to be established through the appropriate investigation rather than through the confrontation at the hospital.
