Nagpur gymnasts excel in Asian Championship

Nagpur: Representing India, Nagpur’s trio of Akshayni Thakre, Garima Wardhe and Sambodhi Hirekhan bagged six bronze medals in the 14th Pre-Youth, Youth, Junior and Senior Acrobatics Gymnastics Asian Championship that were held at the Padem Stadium, Goa.

The mega event was organised for the first time in India under the aegis of Gymnastics Federation of India. Members of Nagpur District Sports Training Centre in Mankapur Akshayni, Garima and Sambodhi won medals in the balance and dynamic categories. City’s Purushottam Darvhankar was Head of Indian Delegation while former top players Mukesh Ghyar and Prachi Parkhi were coaches of the Indian team. All the players practice regularly under the guidance of Darvhankar, Ghyar, Nishant Patil and Rishikesh Varade, Prachi, Alfiya Khan and Rishabh Tiwade.

Gymnastics Association Nagpur President Subhash Gangreddiwar, Vice-President Kamal Sharma, District Sports Officer Pallavi Dhatrak, President of Gymnastics Federation of India Sudhir Mittal, President of Maharashtra Amateur Gymnastics Association Sanjay Shete, Secretary Dr Makarand Joshi and Sports Officer of Nagpur Municipal Corporation Dr Piyush Ambulkar congratulated the medal winners.
