Nagpur goes on Diwali shopping spree: Garment stores packed, Dhanteras bonanza next

Nagpur: The countdown to Diwali has set Nagpur buzzing, with shopping streets bursting at the seams, garment showrooms witnessing a rush of customers and households racing against time to give their homes a festive makeover. Sunday turned into a shopping marathon across Orange City, as the festive frenzy gathered momentum and traders began anticipating a bumper Diwali business.

From afternoon till late evening, the city’s commercial establishments witnessed a steady stream of shoppers, transforming prominent marketplaces into bustling festive destinations. Sitabuldi, Mahal, Itwari, Sakkardara, Gokulpeth, Sadar, Jaripatka and Kamal Chowk emerged as major shopping hotspots, while neighbourhood markets in Ram Nagar, Manish Nagar, Sahakar Nagar, Pratap Nagar, Ramdaspeth, Ayodhya Nagar, Anant Nagar, Pardi, Bhande Plot and Nandanvan also reported substantial customer turnout.

Garments lead the festive shopping stampede

Clothing stores proved to be the biggest crowd-pullers, with shoppers making a beeline for festive outfits. From high-end branded showrooms to modest neighbourhood establishments, retailers experienced hectic business as families prepared their Diwali wardrobes.

Children’s clothing outlets were particularly crowded, as parents prioritised festive purchases for their little ones. Branded fashion chains continued to enjoy strong patronage, with customers keen to cash in on attractive discounts and special festive offers.

Electronics stores and shopping malls, too, witnessed a surge in footfall, as consumers explored festive deals across a range of products.

Online shopping adds to festive frenzy

The Diwali shopping rush is no longer confined to physical markets. Online festive sales have gained considerable traction over the past fortnight, reflecting the growing appetite for digital shopping and bargain hunting.

The combination of crowded traditional markets and surging online purchases has provided an encouraging start to the festive season for retailers.

Homes undergo Diwali makeover

Away from the marketplace madness, Sunday also witnessed the familiar pre-Diwali ritual of cleaning, sweeping, dusting and decluttering homes.

For households, the exercise is more than routine housekeeping. It is an integral part of the preparations for Lakshmi Pujan, when homes are decorated and illuminated to welcome Goddess Lakshmi.

With decorations, purchases and household preparations gathering pace, the city is steadily moving into its most vibrant festive phase.

Dhanteras: The big business test awaits

The trading community is now pinning its hopes on Dhanteras, traditionally regarded as an auspicious occasion for purchasing gold, silver and other valuables.

Jewellers claim that advance bookings have already begun, while several establishments are offering year-long savings schemes that customers can redeem during the festive season.

However, considerable fluctuations in gold prices over the past year have added an element of uncertainty to jewellery sales, making the scale of Dhanteras purchases a closely watched indicator of festive consumer sentiment.

The automobile, steel and electronics sectors are also anticipating a significant sales surge on Dhanteras.

With the festive shopping season reaching its peak, Nagpur’s retail economy is gearing up for a crucial week. The crowds already spilling across markets have raised expectations of a Diwali bonanza, with traders hoping that the festive enthusiasm will translate into substantial business gains.
