Nagpur: In a remarkable display of medical expertise, the Paediatric Surgery Department at Nagpur’s Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) saved the life of a nine-month-old boy who accidentally swallowed his mother’s earring, which became lodged in his windpipe.

Dr Rajendra Saoji, the Head of the Department, explained that the standard procedure for removing foreign objects from the windpipe is usually a non-invasive bronchoscopy. However, due to the prolonged duration of the obstruction in this case, the baby boy had been experiencing distress for over 48 hours.

The incident occurred on May 23, as reported by family members. An X-ray confirmed the presence of the earring in the windpipe, and the child was initially referred to a general hospital in Amravati. Unfortunately, the doctors there were unable to perform the required procedure, leading to the referral to GMCH in Nagpur.

Dr Saoji mentioned that removing the earring posed a challenge due to its pointed end, which increased the risk of internal injury to the child. Nevertheless, the dedicated team of doctors successfully carried out the intricate surgery. The team consisted of Dr Thavendra Vihare, Dr Manish Khobragade, Dr Sonali Tenny, and anaesthetists Dr Jagdish and Dr Tambe.

After the foreign body was extracted, a major complication arose when the infant experienced a situation akin to a cardiac arrest. To address this critical emergency, the medical team promptly placed the child on a ventilator. It took an additional two days of intensive care to stabilize his condition. Recently, the child was discharged from the hospital after making a full recovery and receiving proper follow-up care.

Dr Saoji expressed satisfaction with the successful outcome of the surgery, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of the medical team and the comprehensive care provided to the child throughout the challenging ordeal. The incident highlights the expertise and dedication of the Paediatric Surgery Department at GMCH Nagpur in saving young lives and providing critical medical interventions.
