Nagpur: Amid the ongoing debate over the use of DJs and laser beams during Ganeshotsav, as many as 136 Ganesh mandals in Nagpur have decided not to use DJs during this year’s celebrations and have reportedly submitted undertakings to that effect, former Maharashtra Legislative Council member Sandeep Joshi said.
Joshi has been advocating a citizens’ movement against the use of DJs and laser beams during the festival. Against this backdrop, citizens had recently taken out a silent march in Nagpur on Sunday, raising objections to the loud sound produced by DJs.

On Tuesday, Joshi shared a social media post stating that 136 Ganesh mandals had agreed to refrain from using DJs. He described the voluntary decision by the mandals and the participation of young people as a positive message for society.
A significant number of the mandals on the list are from the South-West Nagpur and West Nagpur Assembly constituencies. Some mandals from South Nagpur and East Nagpur have also decided to stay away from DJs. However, the participation of the 136 mandals does not appear to be evenly distributed across all six Assembly constituencies in the city.
Meanwhile, differing views within the BJP on the issue of restrictions on DJs have also emerged previously. Central Nagpur MLA Pravin Datke and BJP city president Dayashankar Tiwari had opposed a blanket ban on DJs, putting forward a different position regarding the traditional enthusiasm associated with Ganeshotsav and the use of sound systems.
