Nagpur: In a shocking case of alleged sexual assault linked to superstition and false promises of employment, Nagpur’s Hudkeshwar Police have arrested a man who posed as a religious guru. The accused allegedly gained the family’s trust by offering to perform special rituals and promising to secure a job for the victim’s son before sexually assaulting the woman. Police are now investigating whether he targeted other families using similar tactics.

According to police, the accused has been identified as Sanjay Ramdas Shirode (50), a watchman employed at the MSEB office near Tukdoji Chowk. Investigators said he first came into contact with the victim’s husband at the Sub-Registrar’s Office, where he claimed he could help their 21-year-old son get a job as a Mathadi worker. He also convinced the family that a special religious ritual was necessary for the job and the family’s prosperity.

On June 27, Shirode allegedly visited the victim’s house with ritual materials. During the ceremony, he reportedly sent the victim’s husband and son outside to collect tree roots, claiming they were needed for the ritual. Taking advantage of the woman being alone in the house, he allegedly sexually assaulted her.

Police said the accused later continued to pressure the woman by promising employment, prosperity, and the completion of unfinished work. He also allegedly threatened to kill her husband if she disclosed the incident.

The victim remained silent for several days out of fear. However, on July 5, when the accused contacted her again, she informed her husband about the alleged assault. The couple then approached Hudkeshwar Police Station and lodged a complaint.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case, arrested the accused, and produced him before a court. Investigators are now examining whether Shirode used similar methods to deceive and exploit other victims by taking advantage of their faith and employment concerns.

Police said further investigation into the case is underway.
