Nagpur: Cyberattacks and online fraud cases are on the rise across India — and now, even the Municipal Corporation’s official website has come under threat. On October 28, within just 24 hours, hackers attempted to breach the system over 2,000 times, aiming to steal sensitive data.
Fortunately, the attack was detected and blocked in time by the corporation’s firewall protection system, which issued an alert before any data could be compromised. The IT department immediately secured all records through a backup and initiated further protective measures.
According to senior municipal officials, the administration has now begun strengthening its systems using advanced MDR (Managed Detection and Response) technology, which will add multiple layers of security. This upgrade aims to ensure that no cyberattack can affect the corporation’s digital records or online public services in the future.
Attack Details
The XGS138 firewall system detected 2,008 cyberattack alerts on October 28, all targeting the corporation’s data servers. Hackers tried to gain control over critical databases containing property tax records, employee information, and departmental documents.
If successful, the attack could have crippled several online civic services — including grievance redressal systems, departmental permissions, sanitation dashboards, and water supply monitoring — causing major inconvenience to citizens.
Source Traced to Singapore
The internal security logs identified two foreign IP addresses — 104.248.99.110 and 167.99.28.249 — both linked to the dark web. Investigators found that these attacks were routed through servers located in Singapore, repeatedly attempting to infiltrate and seize control of sensitive data.
Thanks to the municipal firewall’s quick defense, the system immediately blocked the attacks and triggered an alert. The IT team then created secure data backups and prevented any data loss.
Next Steps: Strengthening Cyber Defense
A senior official from the administration confirmed that multiple coordinated cyberattacks were reported nationwide on the same day. The municipal website was among the targets, but swift action ensured all data remained safe.
To further bolster digital security, the administration is now implementing ADR (Advanced Data Rescue) and Meta Data Recovery protocols, which safeguard information through multi-layer encryption and segmented storage.
The move marks a decisive step toward protecting vital public data and maintaining trust in the city’s online civic infrastructure.
