Nagpur: Preliminary forensic findings into the death of 28-year-old Sumedh Rajendra Gajbhiye have pointed to a sudden heart attack as the primary cause of death, according to doctors on Wednesday. However, medical examiners also noted small internal injuries on his body, the exact impact and nature of which will be established in the detailed final autopsy and chemical analysis reports.
Following the nature of the incident, the Maharashtra State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has officially taken over the probe. Sunil Ramanand, Additional Director General of Police (State CID), confirmed the development, noting that standard operating procedures for custodial death cases are being strictly followed. The ongoing inquiry in Nagpur will be directly supervised by SP (CID) Abhijit Dharashivkar.
Gajbhiye, a resident of Narsala, allegedly teamed up with an accomplice identified as Deepak Patil. Posing as delivery agents, the duo entered the Prithviraj Nagar residence of Usha Dharmik, located barely 500 metres from the Beltarodi police station. Gajbhiye reportedly threatened the victim with a knife and snatched her gold chain.
Alerted by the victim’s family, local residents pursued the duo. While Patil managed to flee, the mob cornered and allegedly assaulted Gajbhiye. A police beat marshal rescued Gajbhiye and brought him to the Beltarodi Police Station. Shortly after arrival, he complained of severe chest pain and was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur, where doctors declared him dead at around 4:20 pm on Tuesday.
Over 24 hours after the incident, law enforcement has been unable to locate “Deepak Patil.” With no matching crime records or database hits found, investigators suspect Gajbhiye may have provided a fictitious name prior to his death to protect his associate.
The CID investigation will scrutinize the entire timeline, including allegations surrounding the delay in medical intervention and the precise impact of the physical assault versus the cardiac event.
