Nagpur cops bust inter-state gang of ATM robbers from UP

The gang was involved in 36 ATM robberies reported in the Second Capital

Nagpur: In a major success, Tehsil police in Nagpur have busted an inter-state gang of ATM robbers with the arrest of three Uttar Pradesh (UP) residents who were involved in 36 ATM robberies reported in the Second Capital.

The accused have been identified as Rahul Rakesh Saroj (24), a resident of Jaleshwar Ganj Khandwa, District Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh; Ashok Shrinath Pal (26), and Sanjay Shankarlal Pal (23), both residents of Munawhpur, Sorav, District Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

According to police, the gang was targeting ATMs in Nagpur for the past three to four months. Interestingly, this gang was stealing money from ATMs only on Saturdays and Sundays. Recently, they committed two offences in the Tehsil Police Station area. During investigation of the cases, the Tehsil police identified the accused persons and laid a trap. As the police learnt that the accused used to commit robberies on Saturdays and Sundays, the police informers were checking for the accused near a private bus stand.

Following a tip-off that the robbers arrived by a private bus, the Tehsil cops laid a trap at an ATM. As soon as the three entered the ATM, the police arrested them red-handed. The accused have confessed to committing ATM robberies at 36 ATM kiosks across Nagpur. The robbers were using unique modus-operandi to steal cash, especially from unguarded ATM kiosks. They were opening a panel of an ATM machine with a screwdriver and removing a knob from it. When a customer conducts a transaction, the machine fails to dispense the cash. As a result, the cash got stuck near the panel. When the customer left the ATM kiosk, the accused opened the panel and stole the cash from the machine.

The arrests were made under the guidance of DCP Zone III Gajanan Rajmane by Senior Woman PI Trupti Sonwane and her team.
