Nagpur: Shahid Sheikh alias Salim Sheikh alias Shahid Akhtar, the prime accused in the murder of café owner Avinash Bhusari in Ambazari, Nagpur, has been arrested by the city police from Greater Noida after evading capture for nearly three months. The accused had been living under a false identity in a rented accommodation in the Gamma-1 locality of Greater Noida since the murder.
A special team from Nagpur Crime Branch, with the assistance of the Circle 2 Kotwali Police in Delhi-NCR, nabbed Shahid on Sunday. He was brought to Nagpur on a transit warrant obtained from the Gautam Buddha Nagar District Court.
The case
On April 15, 2025, café owner Avinash Bhusari was shot dead in Nagpur’s Ambazari area. Following the incident, an FIR was lodged against unidentified assailants, and multiple police teams were formed to investigate the case.
So far, police have arrested five accused in the case, Shailesh alias Bunty Hiranwar (31), Ankit Hiranwar (22), Adarsh alias Gotya Walke (20), Shibbu Rajesh Yadav (20), and Rohit alias Bhikku Meshram (20).
During the investigation, police discovered that the murder was the result of a long-standing personal rivalry. The gang had conspired to eliminate Bhusari and had purchased three pistols for Rs 1.2 lakh. Shahid Sheikh played a key role in procuring these illegal firearms.
Despite being the main link in the arms supply chain, Shahid managed to evade arrest by frequently changing his location and mobile numbers, making it difficult for police to track him.
However, acting on a tip-off, Nagpur Police traced him to Greater Noida’s Gamma-1 area and contacted Circle 2 Kotwali Police In-Charge Vinod Kumar. A joint operation was conducted, leading to Shahid’s arrest.
After being produced before a local court in Gautam Buddha Nagar, transit remand was granted, and the accused was handed over to Nagpur police. He is now being interrogated for further details about the murder conspiracy and other absconding accomplices.
Police said further arrests are likely as the probe progresses.
