Nagpur: A passenger bus travelling from Jabalpur to Nagpur overturned into a six-foot-deep excavation near an under-construction bridge in the Dumri area on National Highway 44 early Wednesday morning, killing the driver and seriously injuring several passengers.
According to preliminary information, the bus, bearing registration number MH27-8X 6521, was heading towards Nagpur when the accident occurred between approximately 4 am and 5 am. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle near the bridge construction site, causing the bus to overturn into the pit dug alongside the road.
The driver, identified as Sunil Yadav, died on the spot. The accident caused panic in the area during the early morning hours.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Kanhan police rushed to the spot. The injured passengers were shifted to a hospital for treatment. The bus also sustained extensive damage in the accident.
Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the driver losing control of the vehicle. Investigators are also examining whether adequate safety measures were in place near the ongoing bridge construction work.
The exact cause of the accident will be established after the investigation is completed.
