Nagpur: A fierce summer appears to be tightening its grip over Nagpur and the Vidarbha region much earlier than expected, raising fears of a long and punishing heat season ahead. With the mercury steadily climbing, citizens have already begun feeling the sting of the scorching sun as Nagpur recorded a maximum temperature of 37.2°C on Wednesday, sending a clear warning that the worst may still be to come.

Afternoon hours in the city resembled a heat lockdown, with several roads partially deserted as people avoided stepping out under the blazing sun. Hot winds sweeping through the city only intensified the discomfort, leaving residents struggling to cope with the sudden spike in temperature.

The heat wave signals became more alarming across Vidarbha, where Akola emerged as the hottest place in the country, recording a blistering 39.3°C. Other cities were not far behind, with Wardha recording 38.9°C, Amravati touching 38.8°C, Brahmapuri reaching 38.6°C, and Washim registering 38°C.

Meteorological data shows the temperatures have already climbed well above normal levels across the region. Amravati recorded 4.3°C above normal, followed by Akola (+3.7°C), Brahmapuri (+3.3°C), Wardha (+3.3°C), Yavatmal (+3.3°C), Buldhana (+3.0°C), Washim (+2.9°C), Nagpur (+2.8°C), and Gondia (+1.4°C), indicating that the region is already sliding into an intense heat phase.

Even the nights are offering little relief. Buldhana recorded the warmest night in Vidarbha at 20.7°C, followed by Chandrapur at 20.5°C and Wardha at 20°C, pointing to rising nighttime temperatures that further add to the heat stress.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the coming weeks could prove even more challenging. While day temperatures in March generally hover between 35°C and 38°C, the department has warned that several parts of Vidarbha may see the mercury crossing the dangerous 40°C mark for two to three days before the month ends.

More worryingly, weather experts have predicted 10 to 12 heatwave days this summer, higher than the usual 7 to 9 days experienced in the region. This means Vidarbha could face three to four additional days of extreme heat, raising serious concerns about health risks, water demand, and power consumption.

With summer still in its early phase, the soaring temperatures have already sounded an alarm. If the current trend continues, Vidarbha may be staring at one of its most exhausting summers in recent years, forcing citizens to brace for weeks of relentless heat.
