Mumbai/Nagpur: In a massive statewide operation aimed at dismantling a suspected criminal and anti-national network with alleged links to a Pakistan-based gangster, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Wednesday conducted simultaneous raids at more than 40 locations across Maharashtra, including major action in Nagpur.
The multi-city crackdown, which began in the early hours of the morning, covered several sensitive locations including Nagpur, Mumbai, Pune, Akola, Nanded, Nashik, Jalgaon, Mira Road, Nallasopara and other parts of the state. Officials said at least 40 suspects were detained or brought in for questioning during the operation.
According to ATS sources, the raids were launched following specific intelligence inputs regarding the suspicious activities of several individuals allegedly connected to Pakistan-based gangster Shahzad Bhatti and his syndicate.
Investigators suspect that the gang was attempting to build a network of operatives and sympathisers in Maharashtra, particularly targeting youth for unlawful and potentially anti-national activities. Officials said the accused persons were allegedly in contact with Bhatti and other members of his overseas syndicate through digital platforms and encrypted communication channels.
Sources revealed that ATS teams simultaneously swooped down on multiple residential premises and hideouts to prevent suspects from destroying evidence or escaping. Electronic gadgets, mobile phones, documents and other digital material are reportedly being scrutinised as part of the ongoing investigation.
Nagpur figured prominently in the operation, with ATS teams conducting searches and questioning several individuals believed to be under the radar for suspected links with the syndicate. However, officials have not yet disclosed the exact number of persons questioned from the city.
Senior ATS officials stated that the operation was part of a larger effort to curb organised criminal networks operating from abroad and attempting to influence or recruit individuals within India.
Authorities suspect that Shahzad Bhatti, who allegedly runs his network from Pakistan, has been trying to expand his reach through local contacts and social media-based communication. Investigators are now probing whether the suspects were involved in financial transactions, recruitment activities or any conspiracy linked to organised crime or destabilising activities.
Officials maintained that the investigation is at a crucial stage and more revelations are expected once the interrogation of suspects and forensic examination of seized devices are completed.
Security agencies across Maharashtra have been placed on alert following the large-scale operation, while ATS officials indicated that more detentions and searches may follow in the coming days as the probe.
