Nagpur: A major road connecting Wardha Road with the former Shivangaon village, CRPF campus, and Isasani has been permanently closed from July 1, affecting hundreds of daily commuters who relied on the route as a convenient shortcut.
A public notice placed near the MRO taxiway crossing at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport informed motorists about the permanent closure. While the notice does not mention a specific reason, the move is widely linked to the airport’s ongoing redevelopment following the transfer of its management to GMR Group under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The road was frequently used by residents of Isasani, Jaitala, Hingna, and nearby areas to reach Wardha Road quickly, helping them save travel time, fuel, and vehicle operating costs. With the closure, commuters will now have to depend on longer alternate routes.
The closed stretch passes through airport land earmarked for a large-scale modernization project. Under GMR’s master plan, the airport will undergo phased expansion until 2034, including:
- Construction of a new integrated passenger terminal
- Expansion of passenger handling facilities
- Development of additional aircraft parking stands
- New taxiways
- A second runway to increase airport capacity
GMR officially assumed the airport’s management and development rights last week under a 30-year concession agreement. The first phase of the project includes renovation of the existing terminal, followed by construction of the new integrated terminal in subsequent phases.
