Nagpur: Tension has risen at AIIMS Nagpur following allegations that a resident doctor was abused, assaulted and threatened with death. The Resident Doctors’ Association claimed that the doctor was verbally abused and beaten by a patient’s relatives while on duty in the MICU on September 22.

Doctors have also alleged that pressure was exerted using the name of a Member of Parliament. The association has demanded that the concerned MP clarify their position on the matter. It has also called for an end to the practice of providing patients with special facilities or beds based on political recommendations.
According to the doctors, the case registered in the name of the victimised doctor should be converted into an institutional FIR. They have also demanded that the accused in the assault be arrested within 24 hours.
Resident doctors have expressed displeasure with the administration’s response following the incident. The association alleged that the concerned head of department called the victimised doctor back to work without properly checking on their well-being. It has demanded that the administration issue an explanation and take concrete action.
For doctors’ safety, the association has sought the introduction of a ‘Code Violet’, a 24-hour rapid response team and an emergency alarm system. Resident doctors have warned that if their demands are not accepted, they will stop regular OPD, IPD and scheduled surgical services. However, the association clarified that emergency and ICU services will continue to prevent inconvenience to patients.
