Nagpur: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is preparing for a major expansion into the air-conditioned luxury sleeper bus segment, with plans to induct around 200 premium buses as it seeks to challenge the strong presence of private operators on long-distance routes.
The move could significantly change the long-distance travel experience for passengers using the State-run transport network. The proposed fleet will include AC sleeper and luxury buses, with MSRTC focusing on comfort, safety, technology and improved passenger services.

For Nagpur, the Nagpur-Mumbai and Nagpur-Pune corridors have been proposed by the Nagpur Division for introduction of the new AC sleeper services. Both routes have been identified as major long-distance corridors with substantial passenger demand.
Local MSRTC officials said the proposal has been forwarded to the corporation’s headquarters in Mumbai. The final number of buses to be allotted to Nagpur Division will be decided by the headquarters after evaluating demand and operational requirements.
MSRTC takes aim at private luxury operators
The proposed induction marks an important shift in MSRTC’s long-distance strategy, as private luxury buses have established a strong foothold among passengers travelling between major cities.
Officials said the objective is to attract passengers who currently opt for private operators by providing better comfort, safety, modern technology and reliable services under the MSRTC banner.
The corporation is also planning a large-scale induction of Volvo buses, known for features such as advanced suspension systems, passenger comfort and enhanced safety technology.
The proposed fleet is expected to provide a substantially more premium experience than conventional state transport buses.
Private agency to handle passenger hospitality
In a significant departure from the traditional MSRTC operating model, the corporation plans to bring in a private agency for hospitality-related services.
Trained personnel would be deployed to assist passengers, maintain cleanliness and attend to basic passenger requirements during journeys.
However, drivers will continue to be MSRTC employees, officials said. The arrangement is expected to follow the contract-based operational model used for the corporation’s Shivai-E electric buses.
The combination of MSRTC drivers and privately managed passenger services is intended to improve the overall service experience without outsourcing core driving operations.
Luxury buses for long-distance routes
For journeys exceeding 250 km and lasting five to six hours or longer, MSRTC is proposing premium 45-seater luxury buses.
For overnight journeys, the corporation plans to introduce 30-berth and 45-berth sleeper buses, allowing passengers to travel long distances in greater comfort.
The introduction of sleeper buses could be particularly significant on routes connecting Nagpur with Mumbai and Pune, where overnight travel is a major option for passengers seeking to avoid the cost or inconvenience of air travel.
Digital booking to get a major push
MSRTC also plans to strengthen its digital booking system for the new services.
Passengers will be able to reserve seats through the corporation’s online reservation platform, while bookings are also proposed to be made available through private digital travel platforms.
Passengers are expected to be able to check routes, departure timings and seat availability through mobile devices, making the new services more accessible to travellers accustomed to private bus-booking applications.
The move is aimed at narrowing the technology and convenience gap between MSRTC and private luxury bus operators.
Routes to be finalised after demand assessment
The final route plan will be prepared after assessing several factors, including passenger demand, existing MSRTC services, journey distance, travel time and financial viability.
The corporation is expected to examine major intra-State routes as well as selected inter-State corridors where private luxury buses currently enjoy strong demand.
For Nagpur, the proposed Nagpur-Mumbai and Nagpur-Pune services could provide a major new option for passengers seeking a combination of state-run reliability and private-sector-style luxury.
With 200 AC luxury buses proposed for the first phase, MSRTC’s strategy represents a clear attempt to move beyond its traditional image and compete directly in a segment that has increasingly been dominated by private operators.
