Nagpur: In a chilling broad daylight incident, a 23-year-old mother displayed extraordinary courage after four transgender individuals allegedly attempted to kidnap her four-month-old son from their residence in the Gaddigodam area under the jurisdiction of Jaripatka Police Station on Monday afternoon.
The accused, identified as Mohaldul Mafijeddin Malik (26), Saburli Iran Ali Gain (45), Qurban Ali Khan (25), and Sharabuddin Sheikh (20), all natives of West Bengal, have been booked for attempted kidnapping. They were later released after being served notices under relevant legal provisions.

Mother’s brave resistance
According to the complaint lodged by Mehvish Khan, the accused quietly entered her house while she was offering afternoon prayers. Instead of seeking alms, as is common in such neighbourhood visits, one of the intruders allegedly lifted her sleeping infant, Hasnain, from his cradle and attempted to walk away.
Her two-year-old son, Armaan, was playing nearby at the time.
Sensing imminent danger, Mehvish acted swiftly and forcefully pushed the accused, compelling the individual to drop the baby onto the bed. The four suspects then fled the house.
In a state of shock, Mehvish rushed to the nearby house of her brother, Salman Salim Ansari, and raised an alarm. Within minutes, residents of Gaddigodam mobilised and began searching the area. The suspects were eventually located near the Bada Gurudwara, where an enraged crowd surrounded and nearly assaulted them.
Police personnel from Jaripatka Police Station reached the spot in time and prevented mob violence, escorting the accused safely into custody.
Meanwhile, a vigilant local resident dialled the Childline helpline (1098), prompting authorities to verify the infant’s safety and assess the situation.
During questioning, the accused claimed they had merely come to seek alms and “playfully” picked up the infant for a few seconds, denying any intention to abduct the child.
However, police have registered a case of attempted kidnapping and launched a detailed probe.
Human trafficking angle under scanner
District Child Protection Officer Mushtak Pathan has demanded a comprehensive investigation into the incident. He urged authorities to invoke stringent anti-human trafficking provisions if any organised network targeting vulnerable infants is uncovered.
“A thorough probe is necessary to determine whether this group is part of a larger child-lifting racket. A strong message must go out against any attempt to exploit small children,” Pathan stated.
Police Intensify Investigation
Investigators are currently verifying the suspects’ criminal backgrounds, analysing call detail records, examining travel histories, and checking for possible links to similar incidents in the region.
The shocking episode has triggered panic across Jaripatka and adjoining localities, with residents remaining on high alert and closely monitoring the movement of strangers, especially around households with young children.
Police have appealed to citizens to remain vigilant but avoid taking the law into their own hands, assuring that strict legal action will follow based on the outcome of the investigation.
