Nagpur: In a deeply disturbing case that has once again exposed the brutal reality of dowry harassment, a 52-year-old woman and her 29-year-old daughter allegedly ended their lives after being subjected to relentless physical and mental torture by the latter’s in-laws in Nagpur.
The deceased have been identified as Sangita Shriram Dhabale (52), a resident of Venkatesh Nagar near KDK College, Nandanvan, and her daughter Akanksha Lokesh Bramhe (29), who lived in Om Nagar near Nivrutti Park, Sakkardara. On May 1, 2026, both women were found hanging at their residence in Venkatesh Nagar, in what initially appeared to be a case of accidental death. A report was accordingly registered at Nandanvan Police Station.
However, the investigation soon took a grim turn.
Based on the complaint filed by Vilas Keshavrao Pise (47), a resident of Mathni in Mouda taluka, and findings during the inquiry, police uncovered a pattern of sustained harassment that allegedly drove the victims to suicide.
According to the complaint, Akanksha had been facing severe abuse ever since her marriage. Her husband Lokesh Sudhakar Bramhe (30), along with his father Sudhakar Bramhe (60), mother Anusaya Bramhe (48), and other relatives including Prachi Amol Duff and Amol Duff, allegedly subjected her to continuous physical and mental cruelty.
The harassment reportedly revolved around persistent demands for money from her parental home. Adding to the torment, Akanksha was allegedly abused for giving birth to a girl child, who tragically died soon after birth. Instead of support, she was subjected to taunts, humiliation, and violence.
The accused are also alleged to have pressured Akanksha and her mother to transfer agricultural land owned by them into their names. The complaint states that the victims were repeatedly harassed, assaulted, and mentally broken over dowry demands and property disputes, leaving them with no escape.
The sustained cruelty, investigators believe, pushed both women to take the extreme step.
Acting on the complaint, Police Sub-Inspector D.D. Borkar of Nandanvan Police Station has registered a case against all the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions related to abetment of suicide, cruelty, and criminal intimidation, along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
Further investigation is underway.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the area, raising serious questions about the continued prevalence of dowry-related abuse and the failure to protect vulnerable women from systematic harassment within matrimonial homes.
