Nagpur: Residents waiting for the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Nagpur may have to wait a little longer, as weather conditions indicate a slower-than-usual advance of the monsoon across Vidarbha and Central India this year. The monsoon, which normally reaches Nagpur around June 15, is now expected to be delayed.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the progress of the southwest monsoon over Maharashtra has slowed in recent days, and no official onset date has yet been announced for Nagpur or the wider Vidarbha region. Weather experts attribute the delay to weak monsoon circulation over Central India.

Despite the delayed onset, Nagpur and several parts of Vidarbha are likely to continue receiving isolated to scattered showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the coming days. However, these weather events are largely being driven by local and pre-monsoon systems rather than an established monsoon flow.

Meteorologists have indicated that rainfall distribution is expected to remain uneven until at least June 20. Instead of widespread and sustained monsoon rainfall, residents can expect short spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms in isolated pockets of the region.

With the monsoon yet to establish itself, agricultural activities in several areas may be postponed until weather conditions stabilize.

Nagpur recently received pre-monsoon showers that brought temporary relief from intense heat, with temperatures dropping after rainfall in the city. However, weather experts say these showers should not be mistaken for the official arrival of the southwest monsoon.
