Nagpur: An all-girl team from Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur (MNLU Nagpur), has illuminated the global stage with their exceptional performance at the 2023 ADC-ICC Asia Pacific Commercial Mediation Competition which was conducted from the August 26 to 28.
The team coached by Romit Sarkar, consisting of Aparimita Tiwari and Meenal Maheshwari (Fourth Year), alongside Chinmayi Patil and Yukta Chordia (Third Year), has clinched the prestigious title of “Best Mediation Plan,” a testament to their outstanding negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
Among 32 competitive teams from around the world, their remarkable rank of 5th internationally underlines their mastery in the art of commercial mediation. In a magnificent blend of mediation and culture, Meenal presented a captivating dance performance of “Ganesh Vandana” while Aparimita and Chinmayi delivered a heart-warming duet performance of the timeless classic “Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar.”
The team secured the “Talent Award” for their performance representing Indian culture which was showcased in the closing ceremony on the global stage and is also published on the Australian Dispute Centre’s official website. This achievement not only reflects the dedication and hard work of MNLU Nagpur’s team but also stands as an inspiration to all aspiring professionals. Breaking barriers and reaching new heights, they have set a remarkable standard for excellence in both mediation and cultural representation.
APCMC 2023 had 32 teams competing from across 11 countries including teams from Australia, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, Maldives, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. Some countries were fielding teams for the first time, many returning from previous years.
Weeks out from the competition, students are presented with three complex cross border, commercial problem questions. All teams work tirelessly in preparation to understand the law and prepare their negotiation strategy. The competition starts with three preliminary rounds across two days.
Given time zones, they may be competing early morning or late at night. To a person the teams did not miss a beat and were online across 48 sessions ready to negotiate to an incredibly high standard. Frankly the judges were in awe!
Students are mediated by a professional mediator and judged by experienced ADR professionals. The mediation skills and feedback they offer provide an exceptional opportunity for students to build a deeper understanding of the rich tapestry of mediation practice, and how they can use it to best effect as young lawyers and business leaders.
