Nagpur: Even before the dust raised by the Pune Porsche crash case could settle down, an underage mechanic working at an automobile garage rammed a Skoda car into roadside stalls injuring five persons, including three women, in the Nandanvan area of Nagpur on Saturday.
The out-of-control car first hit a few two-wheelers parked on the roadside before moving into the crowd of vegetable sellers, roadside vendors, their customers and a few bystanders. The car, which was heavily damaged, finally stopped after ramming a roadside tree. Some onlookers rescued the accused minor driver from the mob, before handing him to cops.
The injured persons were rushed to Santaji Hospital, KDK College Road, Rajendra Nagar and Anandam Hospital in the same area. All the injured persons were out of danger. A couple, who was on a moped, sustained serious injuries and was admitted to a private hospital.
According to reports, Mangesh Gomase, an office-bearer of a political party, had given his Skoda car (MH-25/R-3929) for servicing at a garage near KDK College. Gomase and the garage owner asked the 17-year-old helper-cum-mechanic to park the car properly on the roadside. The boy drove the car straight on the road and took a U-turn. Instead of applying brakes, he inadvertently accelerated. As a result, he lost control of the vehicle and it rammed into roadside stalls near Vyankatesh Nagar Square injuring five persons.
Mahendra Agrawal (55) and his wife Vandana (54), who were going on a moped (MH-49/AZ-1167), fell off the vehicle after being hit by the car. The Agrawal couple and other injured persons, including Basanti Netam alias Gond (40), a resident of Shrikrishna Nagar; Golu Gupta, Vikram Bhosale (27), a resident of Darshan Colony, were taken to Santaji Hospital and Anandam Hospital.
Bystanders allegedly thrashed the underage driver and handed him over to Nandanvan Police after they arrived at the spot. DCP (Zone-IV ) Vijaykant Sagar also visited the spot to supervise the probe.
Apart from the minor, Nandanvan police detained the car owner, Mangesh Gomase, who’s associated with a political party, for allegedly handing over the car keys to the minor, who worked at a garage. Police also rounded up the owner of the garage, Mahesh Gonnade, for his role behind compelling the minor to drive the car.
