Nagpur: What began as a routine late-night shift at Wadi Police Station quickly turned into a nerve-wracking encounter with one of India’s most dangerous snakes.
Close to midnight on Wednesday, a police staff member stepped out of the station premises for a glass of water — only to freeze in shock. Slithering silently across the compound was a highly venomous Russell’s viper, locally known as the Ghonas, a species feared for its potent bite and unpredictable temperament.
Within moments, the quiet police station was gripped by tension. The officer immediately alerted his colleagues, triggering brief panic as personnel scrambled to ensure everyone’s safety while keeping a safe distance from the reptile.
Realising the seriousness of the situation, the staff contacted Akash Meshram, a member of the Vidarbha Sarpamitra Samiti, known for handling snake rescues across the region. Despite the late hour, Meshram rushed to the spot and reached Wadi Police Station around 2 a.m. on Thursday.
In a carefully coordinated operation that lasted for some time, he managed to safely trap and capture the Russell’s viper without causing harm to anyone. The dramatic rescue brought visible relief to the police personnel, who expressed gratitude for his swift response and expertise.
The snake was later released safely back into its natural habitat, bringing an end to a tense night that the officers at Wadi Police Station are unlikely to forget anytime soon.
